Woodpecker Class

Welcome to the Woodpecker Class page!

This page will be updated every fortnight with exciting activities that we have been up to.

Hello Woodpecker family! Welcome to the Woodpecker page. We always have an amazing time in reception. We enjoy the learning, playing, exploring and the various activities, so we hope you enjoy looking at our activities and our learning experiences.

In Literacy, we have been reading a popular book called 'Dear Zoo' which allows the children to lift the flap to a host of favourite zoo animals after writing a letter to the zoo to send a pet. Woodpecker children loved lifting the flaps to discover the animals the zoo has sent – a monkey, a lion and even an elephant! But will they ever manage to send the perfect pet? Who knows? We discussed which animals make good pets and the best way to look after them! We also looked at the features of a letter to send to the zookeeper for a zoo animal as a pet.

We love our art table and enjoy painting and making classroom display props. We used paper plates to create zoo animals in the story and our very own favourite animals.

In Maths, we looked at 'mass' and 'making teen numbers' which we really enjoyed. We were shown a balance scale and discussed which item is heavier and which is lighter based on the movement of the scale. We used different objects such as stones, feathers, seashells, cubes, numicons, marbles, pencils and moon rocks using rocks wrapped in foil. We enjoyed our balance scale tuff tray for our Maths table which had porridge, rice kripsies and rocks. We worked as a pair with one of us scooping the porridge and the other counting how many rocks are used to balance the scale.

Our PE lesson consisted of running with batons, bouncing and catching the ball as we walked to our cones to improve our coordination. We also decided to have our snacks in the wildlife area. I managed to squeeze my face in the picture and our warm smiles matched the warm weather!

Thank you to the parents who attended our Stay and Play. It is lovely to see more parents attend each time. I will be sure to let you all know when the next one occurs!

To join in the Eid festivities, a few children in Woodpecker class wore their lovely outfits to celebrate Eid and a few of us wore our favourite clothes. I hope those who celebrated Eid had a wonderful and joyous day!

The past few months have been great for reception. We have been on a few trips and the recent one was to the Mosque Masjid-e-Umer located in Walthamstow, which is very close to Mission Grove South Site. We went into the different prayer rooms and also saw loads and loads of books including the Quran. We also saw a cube shaped structure known as the 'Kaaba'. When Muslims pray, wherever they are, they turn towards the Kaaba.

Just a reminder to please log into Bug Club (ActiveLearn: Login (activelearnprimary.co.uk) where you can access many reading books that I have assigned to each child that they can read. I have asked each child their favourite kind of books and have assigned them to their Bug Club library. The login details are in your child's reading record on the first page. Please have a look!

Well done to Aaly, Adnaan, Myah and Antonia for great Literacy work over the 2 weeks!

A gentle reminder that Woodpecker PE days are on Wednesdays and Fridays and Scooter days are Wednesdays. If your child has a scooter or bike, they will be able to ride them in the playground in the sunshine, just leave them in the scooter racks in the mornings, and they will be used in the afternoon!
